讲座内容:Both thermoelectricity and superconductivity are two important phenomena for energy efficiency applications. Thermoelectric materials can directly generate electric power by converting waste heat, and the efficiency is appraised by the figure of merit. A high figure of merit larger than 3 is required to achieve comparable efficiency of the traditional heat engines. Here, we choose several semiconductors or semimetals as examples to show the extremely important role of pressure in tuning thermoelectricity and inducing superconductivity. The general enhancement of the figure of merit is realized in these materials by the application of pressure based on the newly developed high-pressure techniques. Meanwhile, superconductivity is induced in these materials upon further compression. The natural bridge connecting superconductivity and thermoelectricity is thus built. These findings not only demonstrate the remarkable role of pressure played in improving the thermoelectric performance but also offer a new route for finding superconductors from highly efficient thermoelectric materials.

主持人简介:陈晓嘉教授是中科院上海高压科学研究中心终身研究员。 1999年起在德国和美国从事科学研究,大部分时间在华盛顿卡内基研究所的地球物理实验室工作。他是高压下的超导性,磁性,热电性和含氢材料的实验和理论研究方面的专家。他目前的研究重点是通过研究高压的基础物理原理,发现新的超导体和热电材料以及改善已知材料的性能,已在Nature,PNAS,Physical Review Letter,Physical Review B等学术期刊上发表论文120余篇。
